Learning from National Award-winning filmmaker Abhishek Shah during my time at the Parul Institute of Design, Parul University, was an inspiring experience in understanding the essence of storytelling and regional cinema. As the writer, director, and producer of Hellaro—the first Gujarati film to receive the National Film Award for Best Feature Film—his journey demonstrated how authentic stories rooted in culture can achieve national and international recognition.

During the session, he shared valuable insights into screenplay development, directing actors, visual storytelling, and the importance of creating films that connect emotionally with audiences. His transition from theatre to cinema and his dedication to meaningful storytelling offered a practical perspective on building a career as a filmmaker.

For me, this interaction was more than a masterclass—it was an opportunity to learn from a filmmaker who has redefined contemporary Gujarati cinema. Experiences like these at Parul University strengthened my understanding of cinema, encouraged me to think beyond commercial filmmaking, and inspired me to pursue directing with greater purpose and creative vision.

Abhishek Shah is an Indian filmmaker, writer, director, and producer best known for his work in Gujarati cinema. He gained national recognition with Hellaro (2019), which became the first Gujarati film in history to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film (Swarna Kamal). He also received a Special Mention for Best Debut Director at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Before becoming a director, Abhishek Shah spent many years in Gujarati theatre as a writer, director, and actor. He also worked as a casting director on acclaimed Gujarati films such as Bey Yaar, Wrong Side Raju, Chhello Divas, Thai Jashe, and Karsandas Pay & Use, helping discover several notable actors in the industry.

His directorial debut, Hellaro, is celebrated for its powerful storytelling, strong female characters, and cultural roots. The film premiered as the opening film of IFFI 2019, traveled to international festivals including the Cannes Marché du Film, and received multiple national and international honors.
